The author will be in conversation with Andrew Lownie, the Sunday Times bestselling historian.
In True to Their Salt, Ravindra Rathee presents a comprehensive study that uniquely illuminates the memory and history of millions of Indian soldiers who served the Company and the Crown. His research stems from his grandfather’s service to the Raj during the Second World War, and stretches back in time, to the centuries before modern India was ever born. True to Their Salt is written from the point of view of the Indian soldiers, using several first-hand accounts, including the few surviving ones from the 18th and 19th centuries, against the backdrop of larger political, historic, and economic developments in their country and across the Empire.
Ravindra Rathee started his career as a journalist with the Times of India in Delhi. After graduating from St Stephen’s College in Delhi, he did an MA in politics at the University of Hull as a British Chevening Scholar. For the past two decades, he has worked as a banker. This is his first book.
Andrew Lownie was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he was Dunster History Prizeman and President of the Union, before taking his master’s and doctorate at Edinburgh University. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he is the author of Traitor King, The Mountbattens, and Stalin’s Englishman.
