Dance: Nritya Arpan – A spectacle of Taal, Laya, Bhav, and Rasa
Dr. Bipasha Chakraborty, founder of Binapani Kalashram and Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Southampton, offers an enchanting exploration of the classical Indian dance form, Kathak. Bipasha, is an accomplished Kathak dancer with over 30 years of training under renowned gurus, embodies a unique blend of the Lucknow and Jaipur styles. She is joined by her students, Agrita Dandreyal, a Programmes Officer in environmental conservation, and Lata Limbu, a medical practitioner and GP.
This presentation will unfold in two parts. It will open with a soulful ensemble dance to the Krishna bhajan “Kasturi Tilakam,” a masterpiece by Padmabibhushan Pt. Birju Maharaj. The energy will build as Bipasha, Agrita and Lata step forward, offering a beautiful Nritta on Teental Madhya and drut layas, choreographed by Guru Sohini Debnath. Bipasha will then captivate with “Panghat ki Gat” and “Solasringaar Kavitt” by Padamashri Guru Rani Karnaa, embodying the Nayika Radha, adorned in sixteen traditional ornaments, journeying to the water well.
The second half will unveil a mesmerizing group performance of the Krishna Astapadi “Nachata Sudhanga,” a 16th-century work by poet Surdas, beautifully composed and choreographed by Padamashri Guru Rani Karnaa. Bipasha will follow with a vivid portrayal of Lord Rama's heroic tales through the Nayak vedas, set to her own choreography inspired by Guru Padmashri Dr. Puru Dadheech. The performance will conclude with a vibrant group Tarana in Teental and Raag Desh, choreographed by Guru Sohini Debnath. Rich in rhythm and emotion, this presentation will celebrate the timeless beauty and cultural depth of Kathak.
