Dr. Kumud Diwan is a renowned exponent of the Thumri genre of Hindustani classical music. She is a disciple of Padmabhushan Pandt. Chhannulal Mishra of Banaras and she excels in Banaras, Gaya and Lucknow styles of Thumri.
Kumud is an ‘Outstanding Category’ artist of Ministry of culture GOI and an “A” grade artist of All India Radio.
She performs at the most prestigious platforms in India and overseas and is regarded as a foremost exponent of Banaras Thumri in her generation today. Kumud Diwan is an avid researcher and her research on Gaya style thumri for the Sangeet Natak Akademi and her documentation of ‘The Legendary Vaggeykars of Hindustani classical music in the khayal gharanas’ done for the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) are her immense contribution to the field of classical music.
Kumud Diwan has received prestigious awards like the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini award, The Women’s Excellence Award and the Ojaswini Samman for her contribution to music.
She is the guest anchor for the very popular program titled “Kala Samvad’ for Lok sabha TV and has been an advisor to Doordarshan in India.
