January is more than just the first month of the year for the Tamil community, as ‘Thai Pongal’, the multi-day Tamil harvest festival i.e., the Tamil equivalent of Thanksgiving. It is held to honour the Sun, for a bountiful harvest. Families gather to rejoice and share their joy and their harvests with others.
In 2021, the London Assembly voted to recognise January as ‘Tamil Heritage Month’, acknowledging the accomplishments and the vital role played by the Tamil descents to the growth and prosperity of the country.
Recognising the NRI Tamils as cultural emissaries of Tamil Nadu in foreign countries, Government of Tamil Nadu has declared 12th of January as the ‘World Tamil Diaspora Day’ – with a theme “Thamizhaal Inaivom” (let us unite in the name of Tamil).
The Nehru Centre welcomes FeTAUK (Federation of Tamil Associations in UK), in initiating this ‘MUPPERUM VIZHA’ in the UK, to collectively celebrate ‘Thai Pongal’, ‘Tamil Heritage Month’ and ‘World Tamil Diaspora Day’.
