Madhumita Ray received her initial training at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi, from where she obtained her Sangeet Alankar in 1984. She went on to train under Pandit Vasant Thakar and Ustad Ghulam Taqi Khan & Ghulam Hussain Khan, (both sons of the legendary Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan of Rampur) and finally the Rudra Veena maestro Ustad Asad Ali Khan with whom she trained for almost 18 years.
For the semi-classical idiom of Thumri-Dadra, she trained under another musical giant, Pandita Naina Devi. In addition, at various points, she has received training from Vidushi Lalit J Rao (New Delhi/Bangalore), Ustad Maskhoor Ali Khan (Kolkata), Pt. Channu Lal Mishra (Varanasi), Pt. Chandrakant Apte (Jamshedpur), Pt. Balasaheb Poochwale, (Gwalior) and Pt. Ramashray Jha (Allahabad).
“Madhumita’s voice is her fortune. She sings with feeling and beautifully brings out the emotional content of the Raga and the composition. Endowed with a vivid imagination and sensitivity backed by excellent talim, her renditions are appealing and fluent, in both the classical and light classical idiom.” – Vidushi Lalith Rao
