Sunita Avani Amin is a Dhrupad vocalist. She has been trained in the Dagar tradition with Ustad Baha-ud-din Dagar in Bangalore and then went on to learn from his uncle Ustad Zia Farid-ud-din Dagar at Dhrupad Sansar, IIT, Mumbai and Dhrupad Gurukul in Panvel, Maharashtra.
Sunita has a Bachelor’s degree in Dance and Liberal Arts in which she graduated with high honours from Oberlin College, Ohio, USA. She has also performed her Bharatanatyam Arangetram under the guidance of Smt. Padmini Rao while she studied in the The Valley School. KFI, Bangalore.
Sunita was appointed as Visiting Faculty of Musicology at BITS, Pilani and has taught Dhrupad (vocal) to many students of all ages in Chennai and Rajasthan. She has performed widely all over India and in the USA, and in concerts featuring Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Wasif-ud-din Dagar, Pt. Kaivalya Kumar and Pt. Vishwamohan Bhatt. Sunita is a participant in Spicmacay’s programmes in Rajasthan, and has been awarded the Shri Gopal Purohit Kala Award. She has been entrusted to set up and manage the Vishva Dhrupad Gurukul inaugrated by Ustad Zia Farid-ud-din Dagar in Jaipur, and performs, teaches and conducts workshops in the Dhrupad vocal tradition. She has established the ‘National Clasical Performing Arts Festival’ (NCPAF) at the City Palace in Jaipur and has created and conducted the World Classical Music Workshop at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur. She is an All India Radio Artiste, has performed and has been interviewed by Doordarshan Rajasthan in their features ‘Dhrupad Utsav’ in Udaipur and ‘Dharti Dhora Re’.
